Doctor of traditional Chinese medicine

Matthew Stokes is a Doctor of traditional Chinese Medicine, practicing both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

He graduated in 2009 from RMIT university with distinction, where he studied a double degree of applied science, majoring in Chinese medicine and Human biology. The RMIT university double degree program of Chinese medicine/human biology is at the very forefront of training in Chinese medicine in Australia and is widely regarded as the best Chinese medicine training facility outside of China.

Throughout the last 5 years of study at RMIT, he has had extensive experience in a number of clinical settings, including the emergency department at the Northern Hospital in Epping Victoria, as well as completing an advanced clinical internship in Nanjing China for 5 months. During this time, he learnt from and worked along side doctors who specialize in integrating traditional Chinese medicine and conventional western medicines.

Matthew understands and respects the position that western medicine plays in all our lives, however is also aware that, “where western medicine diagnosis and treatment may fall short in some conditions, Chinese medicine excels, and I believe firmly in a complete integrated approach, involving both conventional and complementary medicines to better one’s state of health and well being”. Matthew is happy to work along side your conventional medical practitioner to help comprehensively treat any health concern you may have.

Matthew is also a strong advocate of clear communication between doctor and patient and thus takes great care in ensuring that all his patients understand every aspect of diagnosis and treatment management.

“I believe being a doctor of any medicine, whether it is primary or complementary, is more than just diagnosing and treating the disease, it is also about communicating with the patient to better their health when they are not seeking medical care for a specific issue. Communication between doctor and patient creates trust between doctor and patient, which ultimately leads to the very best outcome for the patient’s health and wellbeing”.

Matthew has an interest in musculoskeletal, dermatological and psycho-emotional conditions.

He is registered with the Chinese medicine registration board of Victoria, and is also an accredited member of the Australian acupuncture and Chinese medicine association.
